You guys have gotten me thinking a lot about life lately, and how quickly it can change. After I posted the story of Stu’s proposal to me, I received a lot of comments and messages about how “perfect” my life seems, many of you describing how you dream that you might one day find yourself in a similar situation to mine. I appreciate these comments immensely. They have helped remind me of just how blessed I am and have made me even more profoundly grateful for my relationship with Stu and my career at Disney. But I also worry that the very limited information I present online about my life may be misleading, and I just want you all to know that things have not always been so perfect and enchanting.

I made this comic just one year ago. Though not directly autobiographical (obviously, since I am not a guy…), it very accurately reflects where I was emotionally. Struggling to recover from the most devastating breakup of my life, I wondered then if I would ever find a truly good relationship. I started to doubt that the kind of guy I dreamed of marrying even existed. And I feared that I had been hurt too deeply to ever really open myself up to someone fully again.

Now, just a year later, I’m about to marry the most amazing man I have ever known, a man who has every characteristic I ever hoped to find, and who is perfect for me in ways I never even knew to look for. I’ve never loved anyone so deeply or felt so at home with another person. It really is a dream come true.

Now please don’t misunderstand my intent. I’m not sharing this to gloat. I’m sharing this story because I think it is important to remember that no one’s life is perfect, that everyone faces struggles you may not know about, and that life can change! Things can turn around more quickly and more completely than you ever thought possible! So if you’re feeling anything like I did a year ago, please just know that there is hope. No matter how dark and heavy and inescapable your current circumstances may seem, there is always hope for a brighter future. Your dreams CAN come true. You CAN find what you’ve always wanted. And it may come to you sooner than you think. You just have to have faith and press forward. Hold on to that hope. Never give up. And know that fairy-tail endings don’t always result from fairy-tale beginnings.
